In Peterborough, CASSA is working with local partners on a small-scale project focused on access to public transit for newcomers and immigrants. Public spaces including bus stops and buses have been identified in Peterborough-specific research that looks at issues facing immigrants, newcomers and people of colour.
Working with organizations like the Community and Race Relations Committee of Peterborough (CRRC) as well as the City through Peterborough Transit, CASSA hopes to develop the following outcomes: - A guide to public transit for newcomers and immigrants in Peterborough
This handy pocket-sized guide is a wealth of information - on the basics of bus travel, on how taking the bus is connected to health and the environment, and on community organizations that provide support to newcomers, immigrants and racialized peoples. An especially unique feature of this guide is the information on what to do if something happens to you on the bus (something discriminatory, something racist, something homophobic). For local distribution, copies are currently available at the office of the Community and Race Relations Committee (CRRC) on Sherbrooke Street, Peterborough. This was released March 25, 2010 in Peterborough! Download PDF: Guide to Transit - English * La guía para el transporte público - Spanish
- A resource guide and training module for Peterborough Transit Building internal capacity is one of the steps necessary to help make any smaller municipality a welcoming community for newcomers and immigrants. To serve this purpose, CASSA is putting together a resource guide and training module on anti-racism, diversity and equity, for Peterborough Transit staff. We are excited that Peterborough Transit is interested and open to receiving such a guide, which will equip staff with the necessary skills and tools to be anti-racist, equity-minded community members! This project is in progress.
