Dear friends:

We are delighted to let you know that CASSA has now completed two years of its three year strategic plan. We are proud to let you know that in the last two years, CASSA has accomplished many things with all of your support, involvement and guidance. We look forward to many more initiatives and activities the final year of the three years. Towards the end of this year, we will start the new process to develop our direction for years to come.

We are pleased to welcome two new members to CASSA: SAVAC (South Asian Visual Arts Centre) and Job Skills Employment and Business Program and Supports.

CASSA is organizing many activities in the month of May to mark South Asian Heritage Month. We are always looking for meaningful partnerships to celebrate SAHM. Therefore, we encourage organizations, institutions and individuals to contact us with your ideas and suggestions.

UPCOMING EVENTS OF CASSA

Discussion Forum on Access to Trades for Newcomers – Apr. 24: The Newcomers’ Access to Trades Taskforce is organizing this forum on April 24th from 10 am - 1pm at The Ontario Federation of Labour Building, 15 Gervais Drive, Toronto. Lunch will be provided. The forum will help internationally trained trades people who want to take action on the barriers to employment by giving them an opportunity to discuss their concerns and connect with others who want to improve access to trades for ITT.

May Day and South Asian Heritage Month Celebration – May 4th: CASSA invites you to join us at the May Day and South Asian Heritage Month Celebration on Tuesday, May 4th at the Ontario Federation of Labour Auditorium at 15 Gervais Drive, Toronto from 6 -9 pm. The event will recognize and commemorate South Asian activism within the labour movement. Panel discussion will address ways to build up better relationships between organized labour bodies and South Asian communities and awards will be presented to five individuals in recognition of their outstanding involvement in the struggle for South Asian workers’ rights. Dinner will be provided. This event is co-hosted and supported by Canadian Labour Congress, The Ontario Federation of Labour, Toronto and York Region Labour Council, United Food and Commercial Workers Canada, The Canadian Auto Workers' Union, and Unite Here Local 75.

South Asian Heritage Month Poster Competition – CASSA invites you to participate in South Asian Heritage Month Poster competition to celebrate South Asian heritage and promote greater access to the arts for South Asian communities in Canada. The winning entries may be used to promote South Asian Heritage Month 2010 and 2011 across Ontario. We are looking for any artwork that depicts a deeper understanding of South Asian communities in Canada. We encourage entries by artists who incorporate anti-racism and anti-oppression principles in to powerful and engaging art. Deadline for submitting entries is 5:00 pm on Friday, May 7, 2010. Selected posters will be exhibited at several South Asian Heritage Month events organized by CASSA. City Hall Information Display: May 17th- 21st: CASSA, South Asian Legal Clinic of Ontario (SALCO), and the Alliance for South Asian Aids Prevention (ASAAP) will be hosting an information display at the City Hall from May 17-21, 2010 as part of the South Asian Heritage Month Celebration to showcase how agencies are significantly contributing to bring positive changes in lives of South Asian communities in Ontario. You can participate in this display by showcasing different documents (such as flyers, brochures etc.) pertaining to your projects/achievements with regard to South Asian communities. Panel discussions will also take place during the display week. More details on this will be released later.

The deadline for submission of all material for display is May 14th. If you wish to be a part of this endeavour, please contact nafisa.tanjeem@cassa.on.ca or 416-932-1359 X 11.

Fires of Resistance 3 - May 9: The South Asian Youth Advisory Committee (SAYAC) will organize the 3rd Annual Fires of Resistance conference on May 9th. A planning meeting has already been held at Ryerson University on March 17th to work out a schedule for the day. This years’ conference will be more exciting then ever with more workshops and performances to look forward to, so mark the date in your calendars! Trailblazers United - Are you a South Asian youth between the ages of 16-24! Join the Trailblazers United: South Asian Youth Leadership Series! Click here for more information and to submit your application online. The deadline for submitting applications ends on April 27th, 2010 at 12 pm.
Community of Practice - Are you a front line youth worker? Join our Community of Practice. Meet other front line workers and learn how to better provide services to South Asian youth and families. Health Equity Report Launch – May 17th: Due to unforeseen circumstances, CASSA had to postpone the launch of The South Asians and Health Equity Report on April 19th at North York Central Library Auditorium. The launch will now take place on May 17th 2010 at the same venue from 10 – 1 pm. More details will be released shortly. For more information, contact Keerthy at keerthy@cassa.on.ca

CASSA AGM – June 21th: CASSA is holding its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on June 21st at Friends House, 60 Lowther Avenue, Toronto from 4:30 to 8 pm, so mark the date on your calendars!!  More details will be released later.

March for Status for All – May 1st: No one is Illegal (NOII) invites you to join in the march on May 1st to show your solidarity towards the struggle for justice for immigrants and refugees that has gone before us. Community with Unity Symposium – May 14th & May 15th: Toronto District School Board (TDSB) invites you to attend a 2 day South Asian Community Symposium on May 14th and 15th at Stephan Leacock Collegiate Institute, 2450 Birchmount Ave, The event will be marked by entertainment, workshops, guest speakers and displays. TDSB launches Parent Satisfaction Survey: As a part of the process to improve parent engagement in learning, a parent Satisfaction Survey is currently being conducted by TDSB. The survey will provide an opportunity to parents to give their feedback to the Board about TDSB schools. The results will provide a benchmark against which a future progress can be measured and used to inform Board and School improvement plans. The survey is available online at www.tdsb.on.ca/parentsurvey .
