CASSA is very excited to invite all of you to participate in our many new initiatives in the upcoming month. Firstly, we are delighted to welcome you to our Open House at our new office. CASSA continues its work in poverty reduction as well as in building welcoming communities in York Region, Waterloo Region and Peterborough. We encourage organizations and individuals to become active participants in our projects and initiatives. With all of your continued support and involvement, CASSA will be able to achieve many more victories in the fight for social and economic justice in Ontario.

Open House – Feb. 23: CASSA invites you to our Open House on Tuesday, February 23rd at Suite 212, 2401 Eglinton Ave. East, Toronto from 1- 4 p.m. All are welcome to attend!!! Refreshments will be provided. For more information, call 416 932 1359 extn. 10.
SAYAC Film screening of “Unfair Dealing” – Feb. 24: South Asian Youth Advisory Committee (SAYAC) is hosting a film screening of “Unfair Dealing” (2008), a Canadian documentary about the so-called Toronto 18, making critical points about Canada's Anti-Terrorism Act, as well as about Canadian authorities involved like the RCMP and CSIS. The film will be screened on Feb. 24th at the Ryerson Students Centre in collaboration with RSU and CESAR. After the film, there will be discussion, including speakers talking about civil liberties. FREE to all, snacks will be provided.

Community Membership Meeting: Vote in your Equity Council Feb. 25th: The Equity Council of York Region Development Group invites you to attend a Community Membership Meeting and vote in the first ever Executive committee for the Equity Council of York Region on Thursday, February 25, from 7 – 9 pm at Angus Glen Community Centre, 3990 Major Mackenzie Drive E, Markham.

International Women’s day – March 14: CASSA is celebrating International Women’s Day in collaboration with “We are for Women and Family Support Services”on Sunday, March 14 at 4175 Lawrence Ave East (Recreation Room), Scarborough, from 10.30 am to 2:00 pm. Join us in rejoicing this year’s IWD theme “Equal rights, equal opportunities: Progress for all” Lunch and free child care will be provided. Anti-Poverty Action Conference – March 22: This anti-poverty conference “Agencies Exercising Agency Poverty Reduction” organized by CASSA will take place on March 22, 9 - 5 pm at Oakham House, Ryerson University (55 Gould Street, Toronto). There will a panel discussion on various topics related to poverty reduction strategies and workshops offered to attendees to address poverty in multidimensional contexts. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Registration is free for CASSA members and students. For non-members, the registration fee is $30. Agencies facing financial concerns may request a waiver.

Trailblazers United! A South Asian Youth Leadership Series – Mar. 06 to May 15: CASSA is hosting a series of sessions focusing on youth engagement and leadership for young South Asian youth from the ages of 16-24 at Fairview Public Library, Room C, 4th floor from March 6th
to May 15th. There will be six sessions related to various topics including leadership, identity, anti-racism, civic engagement, anti-oppression, media skills, fundraising, volunteer management and team building. Certificate of accomplishment will be awarded to the attendees at CASSA’s 3rd annual Fires of Resistance Youth Conference to be held in May 2010. This is a great opportunity for the youth to acquire knowledge and various leadership skills to address social justice issues in our communities!
If you are interested in joining this leadership series, please submit your resume and a write up (300-500 words) on why you are interested in attending this leadership series to Sanjay at sanjay@cassa.on.ca by 12 noon on February 24th, 2010!

“Ontario Education Acts Amendment” Information Session – Feb. 24: Social Planning Toronto is organizing this information session for parents and agencies on Feb. 24th at 1652 Keele st. from 6 to 8 p.m. A representative from the Ministry of Education will be present to answer questions. Network of Agencies Against Forced Marriages – Feb. 26: The South Asian Legal Clinic of Ontario (SALCO) is coordinating this project focused on addressing the myriad social, political, and legal issues concerning the practice of forced or non-consensual marriages. The NAAFM will act as a multi-agency community resource to provide immediate and responsible assistance to clients facing a forced marriage. The first ‘Network of Agencies Against Forced Marriages’ will be held on February 26, 2010.

Call for Performers: Are you a performer of some kind? Identify as a youth? South Asian? The South Asian Youth Advisory Committee (SAYAC) is calling amazing performers to participate in the 3rd annual Fires of Resistance conference, celebrating South Asian youth activism in May 2010. In the past, we’ve had amazing performers including Humble the Poet, Farheen Beg, Stolen From Africa, Gurpreet Chana and others! If you are interested in performing and connecting with youth from across the GTA who share a passion for social justice, please get in touch with Anu at anu@cassa.on.ca. Honorariums are available for performers. Remember, Fires of Resistance 3 (FoR3) is coming … May 2010!
Call For Workshop Facilitators: The South Asian Youth Advisory Committee (SAYAC) is looking for amazing workshop facilitators for Fires of Resistance 3 annual conference in May, celebrating South Asian youth activism. Social justice is the general theme. In the past we’ve had workshops on topics including mental health, yoga for people of colour, migrant justice, spoken word and so much more. Workshops are around an hour in length, and are expected to be participatory. If you identify as a youth and South Asian or a person of colour with experiences or knowledge to share for youth interested in social justice and activism, please get in touch with Anu at anu@cassa.on.ca. Honorariums are available for workshop facilitators.
