Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Welcome to the 2nd issue of e-updates for the month of October. Several exciting events are lined up starting with the book launch on October 16th followed by forums and roundtables. An important event to look forward to this month is the Scarborough Uniting for Economic Justice" Community Forum to be held on October 22nd to mark the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. We welcome you to join us at this event to hear the discussions on Employment Insurance, Employment Equity and Employment Standards. Please check the upcoming events section and our website for more details. I also extend warm welcome to Tetrault Arts Productions, RWDSU, and UFCW Locals 175 & 633 who joined as our newest members.

Bengali Resource Booklet Launch – Oct. 16: CASSA is pleased to launch the Communities in Action Resource Booklet in Bengali on Oct. 16 at Crescent Town Club from 6 to 8 p.m. The resource booklet is a guide for tenants for self advocacy and also a directory of various community organizations. Scarborough Uniting for Economic Justice – Oct. 22: : "Scarborough Uniting for Economic Justice" Community Forum will be held at Scarborough Civic Centre on Oct 22nd, 2009 at 6pm to mark the International Day for Eradication of Poverty. The event is supported and co-hosted by CASSA, Malvern Community Coalition, Good Jobs for All Coalition, Colour of Poverty Campaign, Social Planning Toronto and many other organizations. Gandhi High – Oct. 18: Tetrault Arts Productions is staging a free performance of the play “Gandhi High” at Joseph WorkMan Theatre on October 18th at 2.00 p.m. The play offers a starting point for approaching the issue of youth violence by examining some of the main ideas that Gandhi spoke and wrote about related to tolerance of differences, courage, truth, and non violence. Call for Participation in a Survey of ITPs in the Settlement Sector: The Research Resource Division for Refugees (RRDR) at Carleton University and the Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants (OCASI) have started a joint research project on the extent and experience of immigrant and refugee employment in the Ontario settlement sector. The findings will be helpful for improving access to professions by foreign-trained individuals and for building capacity in the settlement sector. OCASI launches a website for Newcomer Youth: The Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants (OCASI) has launched a new website which provides survival info to the Newcomer Youth across Ontario related to life, school system in Ontario, health, law or work. South Asian Youth Advisory Committee (SAYAC): SAYAC Steering Committee is looking for more Steering Committee members to join the existing team for the term July 2009-May 2010. SAYAC Members are passionate South Asian youth who wish to actively participate in creating a socially and economically just Canada and will work collaboratively towards creating the 3rd Annual Fires of Resistance: Youth Igniting Action conference held every May.
