Dear Colleagues:

Hope everyone is enjoying the tail end of the Summer. We are pleased to continue to be in touch with you through our e-newsletter. We have many exciting news to share with you, as we move into Fall 2009. You will find information about a few job openings at CASSA in this newsletter. We also have two vacant positions for our board members. We are pleased to invite you to get involved with our Access to Trades Task Force, our South Asian Youth Advisory Committee and our Speakers Bureau on poverty related issues and solutions. Our website www.cassa.on.ca has seen a great increase in traffic, so if you are a not for profit organization and a member organization of CASSA, we encourage you to take advantage of posting your jobs, events and volunteer postings on our site.

UPCOMING CASSA EVENTS

Access to Trades Taskforce Meeting – Sept. 23: The Taskforce meeting will focus on advocating with and on behalf of internationally trained trades people wishing to enter their fields of work. CASSA representatives will also meet with the Fairness Commissioner, the Honorable Jean Augustine on Tuesday, September 29th to discuss the steps being taken to improve access to professions and trades for internationally trained individuals. The meeting will take place from 10am-12 pm, location to be announced. If you are interested in attending, please contact Anita at 416 932 1359 x13 or anita@cassa.on.ca.

Equity Council Meeting – Sept. 20: The strategic planning meeting for the Equity Council of York Region development Group will be held on Sept. 20th. Sandgate Women’s Shelter of York Region: New sessions of “Let’s Talk” program for women and children who have witnessed domestic violence and “Women’s Support Group” will commence from Sept. 21st and Oct.1 respectively at Outreach offices in Markham and Keswick locations. Community Safety Audit Training - Sept 23: METRAC (Metropolitan Action Committee on Violence Against Women and Children) invites you to participate in its free training session on Community Safety Audit to strengthen your neighbourhood and build safer communities. Communications Coordinator – Welcoming Communities Initiative (WCI): The individual will be responsible for developing and implementing external communication strategy for CASSA’s  WCI project. The deadline for the applications is Sept. 22, 2009. Click here for detailed job description.

Community Engagement Coordinator: The individual will be responsible for implementing various poverty reduction and youth engagement initiatives for CASSA. The deadline for the applications is Sept. 22, 2009. Click here for detailed job description.

Community Organizers (3 positions): Community Organizers will be responsible for mobilizing and engaging the local communities to address CASSA’s priorities in poverty reduction, access and equity and youth engagement. English/Tamil Interpreter: Multilingual Community Interpreter Services (MCIS) requires an English/Tamil Interpreter to provide interpretation services within the public services sector from English to Tamil and vice versa. Please forward resume to peer@mcis.on.ca

Research Assistant: School of Social Work – York University requires a part –time Research Assistant who will be working closely with the Co-Investigator and Community Collaborator to ensure that the research activities in Toronto/York sites are promptly completed. Call for Chapters - Demeter Press is seeking submissions for an edited volume of “South Asian Mothering” by Jasjit Kaur Sangha to be published in 2011. This edited collection seeks to unravel the complexity of South Asian mothering by initiating dialogue on what it means to be a South Asian mother. For more details, please click here.

South Asian Youth Advisory Committee (SAYAC):
SAYAC Steering Committee is looking for 10 more Steering Committee members to join the existing team for the term July 2009-May 2010. SAYAC Members are passionate South Asian youth who wish to actively participate in creating a socially and economically just Canada and will work collaboratively towards creating the 3rd Annual Fires of Resistance: Youth Igniting Action conference held every May. Nominations for Small Business Achievement Awards
– Human Endeavour is seeking nominations to select five model small businesses from the South Asian community that can be an inspiration to others to start their business and gain self –reliance.
