Amplifying Voices: A dialogue with service providers - Nov. 24 |
|
Council of Agencies Serving South Asians (CASSA) would like to invite service providers to a discussion on inclusion and positive space for LGBTQ+* South Asian service users. Together we want to explore how organizations are developing positive spaces, what are some of the challenges etc. A similar dialogue will take place with South Asian LGBTQ+ community members as well. The ultimate goal of this initiative is to have improved services for the South Asian LGBTQ+ community. Input, feedback and information derived from these dialogues will help with the development of a resource booklet for service providers and frontline workers. The booklet will be launched at a forum (Dec 14th 6:30-8:30pm, Save the Date!) featuring a panel of South Asian LGBTQ+ community, activists and Service providers. Date: Wednesday Nov. 24th, 2010 Time: 2:00pm – 4:30pm Location: Room 206, The 519 Church Street Community Centre (519 Church Street, Toronto) Refreshments will be provided For more details and RSVP please contact Keerthy -

Working Group on South Asian Youth Violence Prevention |
|
CASSA would like to invite some dedicated front line youth service providers to join our Working Group on South Asian Youth Violence Prevention. This initiative is a unique opportunity for those with front line youth service provision experience to address some of the issues regarding service provision to South Asian youth in a meaningful and constructive way.
The overall goal of this Working Group is to improve the service provided to South Asian youth, but also to enhance the service providers’ ability to engage this particular youth community. There will be four meetings altogether (from Nov-Jan), and will provide a safe space for service providers to discuss their successes in reaching out to South Asian youth involved in situations of violence, as well as to talk about their ongoing struggles. Your valuable insights and inputs will enhance the on going dialogue and will contribute to the booklet of promising practices that we plan to distribute among youth service providers across the GTA. The publishing of this booklet ensures that the knowledge at these meetings are retained and replicated. We aim to improve service provision to South Asian you by disseminating these booklets and empowering other service providers through the best practices that we are able to gain at the table.
The pre-requisite for joining this conversation is that the youth service provider be someone who works with South Asian youth often or regularly and also commit to attending all four meeting. All of the service providers who are consistently involved in this Working Group initiative will be recognized as “contributors” in this final publication.
If you are unable to make it, please feel free to forward this information to colleagues in your network who may be interested in joining this effort. Thank you! Event: Working Group on South Asian Youth Violence Prevention - First Meeting Date: November 25th, 2010 Time: 1 – 3PM Location: Meeting Room, Newcomer Services for Youth - Malvern Branch (31 Tapscott Rd, Toronto) Refreshments will be provided. Trailblazers United: A South Asian Youth Leadership Series |
CASSA is hosting a series of workshops focused on youth engagement and leadership for South Asian youth from the ages of 15-24!
This unique leadership series seeks to train and help engage 10-12 South Asian youth to create and run projects within their own communities. Training will be on topics related to anti-racism, cultural identity, South Asian history, self esteem, health awareness, civic engagement, anti-oppression, leadership, media skills, fundraising, volunteer management and team building.
Once participants have received their training they will be given the opportunity to create and deliver either a project or event within Scarborough. This project/event will use the core skills learned from the training to bring awareness to the root causes and impacts of violence.
Violence and the root causes of violence addressed through this project can include: • gang violence • bullying • hate crimes • islamophobia • intergenerational issues • struggles with employment • dating violence • depression • anxiety • accent-related withdrawal • isolation • drug abuse • racism • stereotyping • lack of representation
Youth who attend all the workshops will be awarded a certificate of accomplishment by CASSA. This is a great opportunity for youth to acquire knowledge and various leadership skills to address social justice issues in their community, while meeting other interesting, like-minded South Asian youth!
If you are interested in joining this leadership series, please click here and submit your application online. Applications will be accepted based on your qualification and the availability of space.
