The No Gangs Unit - Steels L’Amoreaux /Agincourt Division Neighbourhood: Steels L’Amoreaux /Agincourt Team Members: Shelly Kaushik, Habiba Raza, Areeba Tariq & Hafsa Zarook Project Details: This group will be holding an anti-gang violence seminar talking about the issue of gang violence within their community. The main focus of this project is to reduce the amount of gang violence within Steeles L’Ameroux by brining awareness to the issue.
Event Details: Title: South Asian Youth Discuss Gang Violence in Scarborough Date: Wednesday, September 29th, 2010 Location: Fairview Library, 35 Fairview Mall Drive Time: 4:30pm-8:30pm Cost: Free + TTC tokens and refreshments for participants * note there is a 30 person limit, high school community service hours will be provided.
The Malvern Crew Neighbourhood: Malvern Team Members: Soha Hirdi, Japesh Mistry, Anoja Dayabaran & Sureka Jagnathan Project Details: The Malvern Crew is organizing a video commercial contest open to all South Asian youth focused on anti-violence and anti-bullying. This commercial will be highlighted on CASSA’s website Project Details: Please visit www.cassa.on.ca/video-competition for contest details (will be up soon). Contest deadline is October 29th, 2010. The Crescent Town Cubs Neighbourhood: Crescent Town Team Members: Nadia Chowdhury, Sadman Hasan, Kirubhalini Giruparajah, Zohra Ahsan & Diana Saverimuthu Project Details: The objective of this project is to look at the effects of bullying within the South Asian community. The project will be taking place in September and take the form of a panel series on the effects of bullying on South Asian youth. This will be an interactive session that engages youth and allows them to share their experience within a safe environment. Subtopics covered will include: 1. How do South Asian youth experience bullying? 2. What are the negative stereotypes attached to bullying? For example, racism, sexism, gender and sexual orientation. 3. How do South Asian youth cope with bullying? Who do they turn to for help? 4. What are the long-term effects of bullying on South Asian youth? 5. What are the short-term effects of bullying on South Asian youth?

Trailblazers United: A South Asian Youth Leadership Series |
CASSA is hosting a series of workshops focused on youth engagement and leadership for South Asian youth from the ages of 15-24!
This unique leadership series seeks to train and help engage 10-12 South Asian youth to create and run projects within their own communities. Training will be on topics related to anti-racism, cultural identity, South Asian history, self esteem, health awareness, civic engagement, anti-oppression, leadership, media skills, fundraising, volunteer management and team building.
Once participants have received their training they will be given the opportunity to create and deliver either a project or event within Scarborough. This project/event will use the core skills learned from the training to bring awareness to the root causes and impacts of violence.
Violence and the root causes of violence addressed through this project can include: • gang violence • bullying • hate crimes • islamophobia • intergenerational issues • struggles with employment • dating violence • depression • anxiety • accent-related withdrawal • isolation • drug abuse • racism • stereotyping • lack of representation
Youth who attend all the workshops will be awarded a certificate of accomplishment by CASSA. This is a great opportunity for youth to acquire knowledge and various leadership skills to address social justice issues in their community, while meeting other interesting, like-minded South Asian youth!

Youth Leadership Retreat - May 29th |

CASSA and the City of Toronto invite you to attend our Youth Leadership Retreat on Saturday, 29 May 2010 atCedarbrook Community Centre, 91 Eastpark Blvd, Toronto. This retreat is for all youth of South Asian descent, age between 14-25 who are interested in developing leadership skills. A number of workshops will be held focussing on topics like leadership and communication skills, anti-oppression, conflict resolution etc. Registration is free! Celebrating South Asian Heritage Month - City Hall Information Display May 17-21 , 2010 |
CASSA, South Asian Legal Clinic of Ontario (SALCO), and the Alliance for South Asian Aids Prevention (ASAAP) will be hosting an information display at the City Hall from May 17-21, 2010 as part of the South Asian Heritage Month Celebration to showcase how agencies contribute to bring about positive changes in lives of South Asian communities in Ontario through display of material pertaining to projects involving South Asian communities.
